I first participated in Be Bold Be Bald in 2009, a friend brought it to my attention and I thought, since I have a close friend that has been battling cancer for many years, I would participate, have fun and raise some money to help fight this horrible disease. Little did I know, only a few months later I myself would be diagnosed with cancer.
The little lump inside my cheek was more of an annoyance for some time, but I contined to press my doctors for answers. Fortunately, I was able to get the right referral. Even after the biopsy the doctor was confident it would be nothing. However, when I went back for the results (on my wife's birthday no less), it was pretty shocking to hear the words "we found a malignancy".
One surgery and 33 radiation treatments later, I consider myself lucky. The cancer was detected early and treated aggressively. The biggest thing I learned from all of this is you have to be your own health advocate when it comes to this stuff, my primary care physician basically ignored this bump on at least two occasions when I asked him about it and told me only to worry if it got much bigger. I was the one pushing for the biopsy, and I am damn glad I did.
So as the 2010 Be Bold event approached, I knew my attitude would be different. I am now completely focused on doing my part to help get rid of this horrible disease. The "treatment" I went through was nothing I ever want my own children to have to endure, and again I was lucky with radiation only and no chemo. But I want a cure!
A few friends of mine, upon making an initital donation to my campaign mentioned they'd double or even quadruple their donations if I actually shaved my head and not just don the bald cap. I couldn't pass up that opportunity to raise more money for cancer research, so I was all over it. This Friday, October 22nd I will make an even BOLDER move by getting the clippers out. Go BIG or go home!
