15 years ago I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in my left breast and considered myself very lucky that it was caught on a mammogram and was only the size of a dime. 8 nodes were removed and they were clear. A lumpectomy and radiation was the treatment. Less than two years later I was diagnosed again with breast cancer in my right breast. This time it had stayed in its place of origin. Again, it was only the size of a dime and although I was depressed wondering why this was happening to me again, I considered myself very lucky. The treatment was the same - lumpectomy and radiation.
In early July of this year, I was diagnosed with breast cancer for a third time. I had a left breast simple mastecomy. My surgeon thought I would only have to take Arimidex for the rest of my life. When I met with my oncologist, I was in total shock at what he had to say. I have a very aggressive and nasty form of cancer. Despite the fact that it was only about 1/2 inch in diameter that didn’t mean anything except that the mammogram caught it before it could grow more. I am now in chemotherapy weekly for 12 weeks. After that, I will be going every third week for infusions of Herceptin for one year.
My oncologist thinks this will give me another 5 years which will allow me to be a part of my grandsons’ lives and hopefully they will remember that their grandmother loved them more than anything else in this world.
So, I am participating in the Be Bold, Be Bald campaign to be of support to my fellow cancer patients. My hair is beginning to thin out now and I expect to actually be bald before Thanksgiving. If people gain a greater awareness of this terrible disease it will be worth the stares and comments.
