I’ve always wanted to participate in a fundraiser for cancer; but it has never seemed like the right time, location, or way to do so. Be Bold, Be Bald will make a huge visual impact on the community in addition to being a great way to raise funds for a good cause.
I am participating for many reasons. Both of my grandfathers died from cancer, my grandmother, aunt and uncle are survivors, and a few years ago I was close to losing my father when a mass in his colon was shown to contain precancerous cells. The daughter of my college friend was born with cancer. Having two young children of my own, I couldn’t imagine dealing with that— the thought of any minute losing them. My friend shaved her head for a fundraiser they were doing and I thought that wearing a bald cap would be the closest I could come to that myself.
I work in a middle/high school in North Central Massachusetts and look forward to turning students’ heads all day. Part of my job is focused on community outreach so on the 22nd I will be bald at a Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Planning meeting; I will be bald while I give a tour to a prospective family; I will be bald when I go to the grocery store, the bank, the book store, and while I walk up and down Main street.
